We had the pleasure of meeting Henry Red Cloud who is the founder of Lakota Solar Enterprises and the 5th generation descendant of Chief Red Cloud. Lakota Solar is a non-profit dedicated to brining renewable energy retrofits to those in need on Tribal Land. It was an honor to stay at his Renewable Energy Center on Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota.

At Henry Red Cloud’s Renewable Energy Center he has lots of small scale examples of off grid systems he uses as teaching tools. Small projects like this ‘light in a bucket’ have been brought to Standing Rock and other water protector camps as a teaching tool and valuable lighting technology .Wind, sun and water are key elements for Henry Red Clouds renewable systems he installs to help Native Americans who have no heating on electric on reservations. He calls it the “new ways to honor the old ways”.

We plan to return to Pine Ridge this winter to capture the Lakota Solar Enterprise installing solar heaters and panels for those in need!
